Quiet, little Williamsburg is the last stop for the bus serving the Pioneer Valley educational and cultural centers of Northampton and Amherst. This makes for a relaxing visit to a small town with a deep connection to the identity of the Hidden Hills.
History buffs can learn in detail here about one of the many tragedies that came with the Industrial Revolution to the Hidden Hills. Like many Western Mass towns, modernization brought an intensive milling industry to the banks of the Mill River, a subsidiary of the Connecticut River. On 16 May, 1874, the Williamsburg Reservoir Dam burst and sent a 20 foot wall of water onto the town, killing 139 people and leaving much of the residents homeless.
