Chesterfield’s center is one of the best preserved of the Berkshire foothill towns. It’s lined with a series of Federal Period homes along its Main Road. During the 1760s, Chesterfield thrived largely as a producer of Merino wool, using the hills about it for grazing sheep.
A must for tourists, Chesterfield Gorge is both a historic
(see the stone abutments of bygone bridges from the
American Revolution) and a natural (a rare glacial carving out
of metamorphic bedrock) attraction.
